In the midst of one of the harshest winters in recent memory, two heroic Middle Township police officers embodied the essence of service and compassion. During a blizzard that delivered a staggering 19 inches of snow across South Jersey, Officers Shawn Karge and Tom Runyon went above and beyond their calls of duty to rescue an elderly widow, Helen M. Baker, who had been snowbound in her home without electricity for four grueling days.

The blizzard, which took place in February 2026, was responsible for the unfortunate loss of 15 lives statewide, casting a chilling shadow over the region. Ms. Baker, living alone and unable to charge her cell phone, was cut off from communication, prompting her concerned cousin to reach out to the Middle Township Police for a wellness check. Without hesitation, Officer Runyon answered the call and, upon discovering the difficult circumstances, began to assist her.

Upon arriving at her home, Officer Runyon provided Ms. Baker with crucial information about emergency housing options and available charging stations during this dire time. Realizing the urgent need to ensure her safety and mobility, he started clearing her snow-covered walkway. Seeing his commitment, Corporal Karge swiftly joined in, and together, they worked tirelessly to not only clear pathways but also to relocate her car for easier access.

Mayor Chris Leusner highlighted their dedication, stating, “These officers exemplify the dedication and community spirit we value in Middle Township.” At their upcoming Township Committee meeting on May 4, they will be formally recognized, alongside a special invitation extended to Ms. Baker herself, showcasing the bond formed through this remarkable experience.
